Rural Health Information · Rhins & Machars

Clear Health Answers,
Wherever You Are

Atlas brings trusted health information directly to the farms, villages and coastal communities of the Rhins and Machars — through a freephone advice line and a travelling information van that comes to you.

Our Story

When the nearest surgery is twenty miles away and the bus only runs on Tuesdays, a niggling question about a new prescription or a worry about a family member's symptoms can quietly grow into something much harder to manage. Vibrant Health Advocates – Atlas was built to close that gap. We serve the dispersed communities of the Rhins and Machars peninsula and the inland parishes stretching east toward Newton Stewart — an area of extraordinary beauty whose residents have long lived with limited access to the kind of casual, low-threshold health guidance that people in towns take for granted.

Our trained health information advisers answer the freephone line six days a week, offering clear, up-to-date information drawn from NHS guidance and signposting callers to the right services for their needs. Every fortnight, our Atlas van pulls into farmyards, village halls, harbour car parks and community centres, bringing leaflets, one-to-one conversations, blood pressure checks and the simple reassurance that someone knowledgeable is within reach.

Three ways Atlas is here for you

We believe no one in rural Galloway should feel stranded when a health question arises. Here is how we make that real.

📞

Freephone Advice Line

Our advisers are on the line Monday to Saturday, ready to talk through health questions calmly and clearly. Calls are free from any phone, including mobiles, and no appointment is needed.

🚐

The Atlas Van

Our distinctive blue information van visits over forty stop points across the peninsula and Machars every fortnight, bringing health resources directly to the places where people already gather. No travel, no waiting room, no hurry.

🌿

Rural-First Approach

Everything we do is designed around the realities of life in scattered rural communities — unreliable transport, patchy broadband, farming schedules and the quiet stoicism that can make asking for help feel difficult. We meet people where they are.

Rooted in the communities we serve

Vibrant Health Advocates – Atlas is a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation established by a small group of people who had watched neighbours, relatives and farming families navigate health concerns in near-isolation. We exist because the practical geography of the Rhins and Machars makes casual contact with health services genuinely difficult.

As a SCIO, every penny we raise is directed into our charitable purposes. We are governed by a voluntary board of trustees who bring experience in rural healthcare, community development, financial management and lived knowledge of Galloway life.
